Our Mission
Interfaith Outreach Home (IOH) helps families with children recover from an episode of homelessness and return to self-sufficiency. The IOH transitional housing program provides a safe, secure, and nurturing environment to homeless families who want to return to, and are capable of returning to, financial independence and self-sufficiency. IOH serves two-parent, legally married couples and single heads of households.
Our Program
Families with children are the fastest growing segment of Atlanta's homeless population; such families are at grave risk of splitting apart. IOH keeps families intact, safe, and stable. Families work with our case manager to develop a customized recovery plan and set achievable goals. The IOH program includes counseling and training in life skills, budgeting, and parenting. Children benefit from tutoring, after-school, and summer camp.
Our Home
Families in the IOH program live in self-contained two room apartments in a custom designed Doraville facility. Each of our ten apartments has a bathroom and small kitchen. Each floor has laundry facilities. Thanks to drives held by church, civic, and school groups, IOH has a pantry stocked with nonperishable foods and household supplies. Families typically reside at IOH for nine to twelve months.
Our Roots, Our Support
Since the first familiy moved into IOH in January 1992, we have served more than 200 families in need. IOH's origns reach back to the late 1980's, when a group of 30 north Atlanta churches of all denominations banded together to address the issue of homelessness among families. Local churches remain a source of steadfast support, as do individual financial supporters, businesses and civic groups, and volunteers.
Our Results
Our sucesses are many, but none so rewarding as seeing a formerly homeless family become homeowners. Three years ago, one of our families headed by a single mother closed on a brand new townhome. Through goal setting, financial management coaching, individual and family counseling, and personal growth and development, this mother saved enough money to pay old debts, improve her credit, and make a down payment. She has learned basic life skills that give here the ability to cope with any adversity she may face.
